I’ve always loved the word nocturne, as it crosses over between art and music.
The American Heritage Dictionary defines nocturne as:
1. A painting of a night scene.
2. An instrumental composition of a pensive, dreamy mood, especially one for the piano.
When I think of nocturnes, I think of Chopin’s haunting, moody piano nocturnes. Music with a particular feeling. Like music, the best paintings make us feel. New York at night has it’s own feeling. Exciting and dynamic, but also melancholic and ephemeral. Over the years, I’ve tried to capture this feeling in watercolor, but recently I’ve found the iPad to be an even better medium for painting New York at night.
This New York nocturne, painted on my iPad, captures the view from 6th Avenue and 42nd Street looking east towards the Chrysler Building. Not the gritty, intense New York of the daytime, but the romantic and moody New York of the evening. This painting of New York at night is available as a print in my online shop. Each print is made to order in a choice of sizes and framing options; on fine art paper, gallery-wrapped canvas, metal or acrylic. Custom artwork is ready to ship in 3-4 business days and comes with a risk-free 30-day return policy.
