I recently visited the “China Through the Looking Glass” exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art here in NYC. It’s a bit of a multi-media extravaganza, but nevertheless a feast for the eyes. The show is a collaboration between the Met’s Costume Institute and Department of Asian Art. High fashion is on display next to traditional Chinese costume, decorative arts, paintings and film. It was the film component that was overkill for me. Huge (& noisy) videos projected onto the gallery walls were a distraction from the exquisite objects. These days it seems museums are trying to replicate our multi-screen, multi-tasking world rather than offering us a break from it.
