A sketch inspired by a recent performance of George Balanchine’s Jewels at New York City Ballet. One of my favorite ballets, it features three jewel-themed dances – Emeralds, Rubies and Diamonds – with music by Fauré, Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky and glittering, jewel-bedecked costumes by Karinksa. The emeralds section is dreamy and poetic; rubies is jazzy; and diamonds is glamorous and refined.
