As many of you know, I’ve studied dance, in one form or another, for most of my life. For many years I did flamenco, then couple of years ago I decided to return to ballet – something I hadn’t done since my early 20s!
One of my teachers,Richard Marsden, has been teaching an advanced variation workshop and generously allowed me sketch the dancers. Since the dancers rarely stop moving, and no cameras are allowed in the studio, I’ve had to learn to sketch very quickly and intuitively. Needless to say, I now have even more respect for artists like Degas and Toulouse-Lautrec who captured dancers in motion so masterfully.
Here are some of my live ballet sketches, drawn with dark blue Pan Pastel.(Balanchine aficionados will recognize a few poses from Serenade.)
